    讲座人介绍:Nathan Ida is Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, USA. His current research interests are in the areas of numerical modeling of electromagnetic fields, electromagnetic wave propagation, theoretical issues in computation, nondestructive testing of materials at low and microwave frequencies as well as in communications, especially in low power remote control and wireless sensing. Dr. Ida has published some 250 papers on electromagnetic field computation, parallel and vector algorithms and computation, nondestructive testing of materials, surface impedance boundary conditions, electromagnetic and microwave sensors and others. He has written six books, two on computation of electromagnetic fields a third on nondestructive testing with microwaves, a textbook on electromagnetics, now in its third edition, a monograph on surface impedance boundary conditions and a textbook on sensors and actuators. Dr. Ida is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the American Society of Nondestructive Testing (ASNT), a Fellow of the Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society (ACES) and a Fellow of the Institute of Electronics and Technology (IET). Dr. Ida teaches Electromagnetics, Antenna Theory and Electromagnetic Compatibility, Sensing and Actuation as well as Computational Methods and Algorithms.

     

    讲座摘要:Ground penetrating radar (GPR) is a common tool for detection, evaluation and assessment of buried objects and structures. Developed originally for location of infrastructure elements such as pipelines it has become a much more versatile tool by both expanding into larger and deeper structures such as tunnels and underground formations and by increasing resolution for detection and evaluation of smaller artefacts such as inclusions and reinforcement bars in concrete or even the capability of distinguishing between layers of materials. Current uses range from assessment of road surfaces to archaeological surveys. The current talk will first discuss the basic system starting from a trivial reflection method to more sophisticated CW and pulsed radars. In addition to applications we will also discuss issues with signal processing, interpretation of signals and limits on detectability. As part of the overall system, antenna design and optimization is of utmost importance and this will be discussed both from a simulation point of view and from experimentation. Many of the applications discussed deal with evaluation of concrete as this is an important issue in nuclear power plants where the health of concrete structures such as containment vessels is of critical importance in extending the life of aging nuclear power plants. The talk also discusses areas in which GPR can be improved, especially in imaging.
